It's The Truth, The Whole Truth, And Nothing But The Truth

I actually started gasping for air as Amanda started with her story.

"I shot and killed two people, two men, last year in San Diego."

OMG WTF??  I think my face lost all of its color.  What did she just say?

Amanda looked serious and continued speaking, "Let me just tell you the whole story from start to finish right now and then if you have any questions I'll answer them.

She was actually sounding stern to me!

"Paul, please just keep an open mind until I am finished."  She must have seen the color drain from my face.

"Sure Amanda."  I'm not going to create any friction at this point.  I let her speak uninterrupted.

"Last December I was in San Diego visiting my parents for the holidays.  On the night after Christmas I really needed a break from the family, the little kids, and just being cooped up in the house with too many people.  I decided that I would go see a movie.  I drove down to a mall where there was a theater, parked the car, and walked inside."

Amanda seemed to be a little shaken as she started to describe that night.  She was looking at me but I'm not sure she was actually seeing me.  Normally she is quite the cool and calm person.  She never seems shaken or distressed.  But right now she appeared to be in a frame of mind that was very tense.

She continued, "After the movie I walked over and ate at a restaurant on the perimeter of the mall parking lot.  And then when I was finished, it was about nine o'clock, I started walking back to my car.  I remember that as I was walking I was thinking about my pending move to Las Vegas.  I was so happy that I had made the decision to move to Vegas.  California had grown old to me."

I thought quietly to myself, "Get to the point Amanda.  I don't need the fluffy background information about how you felt living in San Diego."  Of course I didn't dare say a word of this to her.

"Two men approached me just as I got to the car.  I had made a stupid mistake.  I had not taken the keys out of my purse, so  I couldn't really make a mad dash into the car and lock the doors."

Her voice started trembling, "One of the men grabbed me from behind by my hair as the other said something like, "Be quiet and you won't get hurt."  "I didn't believe him and grabbed inside my purse and pulled out a gun I carry for protection."

Okay, I just learned something new.  Something I didn't know before.  The old gun in the purse trick.  I didn't see that coming.  I think I can joke a little because Amanda is right in front of me telling the story so she made it through this incident okay.  At least I think she did.

"I screamed for the two of them to back off.  But they didn't.  The one pulling on my hair was now trying to pull me down to the ground.  That was it I had enough.  I wasn't going to be a victim.  I screamed once again hoping somebody would come over and help me.  Nobody did.  It seemed like an eternity but it was more likely just a minute or two.  The man standing in front of me punched me in the face.  That was all it took for me to go into survival mode.  I used what I had.  I shot the man that had just punched me.  He folded down to the ground in a pool of blood.  I could not believe the other one, the one pulling me down by my hair would not cut and run at this point, but he did not.  I hit him in his gut with my elbow.  This must have startled him enough to loosen his grip on me.  I turned and fired at him.  I hit him and he went down to the ground. As all of this was happening I really didn't notice anything else around me.  But as it turned out the sound of the shots being fired finally attracted some attention.  Someone must have called 911 because I could hear sirens approaching from all directions."

Amanda took a deep breath.  She wanted to continue.  It was like she had a need to cleanse herself of the entire story.  I wanted to hear the rest of the story and I'm sure she was going to let me have my wish.
